 We Have a Resolution

“With an unprecedented reference to transitioning away from all fossil fuels, The UAE Consensus is delivering a paradigm shift that has the potential to redefine our economies,” “We delivered world first after world first,” “A global goal to triple renewables and double energy efficiency. Declarations on agriculture, food and health. More oil and gas companies are stepping up for the first time on methane and emissions. And we have language on fossil fuels in our final agreement.” UAE Presidency announced on social media.

Approximately 200 Government ministers agreed to a deal that calls for a transition away from fossil fuels, after a previous proposal was met with heated and widespread backlash. The latest proposal published by the UAE earlier on Wednesday called for “transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science.”

The deal text also urged for “accelerating efforts towards the phase-down of unabated coal power” and for “tripling renewable energy capacity globally and doubling the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030.”

UNESCO at COP28: Making education the long-term solution to the climate crisis

UNESCO played a key role in the various dialogues on accelerating climate change education and emphasized the significance of sustainable learning in fostering long-term solutions for the climate crisis. A major highlight of the gathering was launch of the Declaration for Climate Change and Education, focused on adaptation, mitigation and investment – which was signed and endorsed by 39 countries.

UNESCO is actively involved in accelerating climate change education and will showcase its efforts at the global stage during this year’s United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December 2023. This international event provides a valuable platform for securing commitments and actions from countries regarding climate change education. From greening schools and curriculums to climate change education, the essential role of learning in providing long-term solutions for the climate crisis is taking centre stage at this year’s conference.

Throughout the 13-day event, UNESCO will co-host a series of events highlighting the essential role of education in getting every learner climate-ready, and the importance to address the impact of climate change and related displacement on the right to education. In collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Education UNESCO as secretariat to the Greening Education Partnership will establish the first historical Greening Education Hub, featuring over 200 sessions organized to promote concrete actions and solutions through education. Youth members of the Partnership will also play a leading role in the dialogue and paving the next steps.

Australia’s Commitment to Blue Carbon Ecosystems.

Australia, at COP28, reaffirms its commitment to restoring and protecting blue carbon ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrasses, and tidal marshes. These environments, known for carbon capture, also support marine life, food security, and water quality.

The Blue Carbon Accelerator Fund, in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), will provide over $3 million in grants for projects across the Indo-Pacific. Focused on conservation and restoration, these projects aim to strengthen community engagement and positive ecosystem outcomes.

Australia, part of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, pledges to sustainably manage 100% of national waters. Partnerships with Japan and the International Partnership for Blue Carbon underscore the commitment to global ocean and climate action.

Mangrove Breakthrough: A Global Initiative at COP28

The Mangrove Breakthrough, a collaborative effort by governments, NGOs, and financiers, seeks to secure $4 billion and protect 15 million hectares of mangrove forests by 2030. The UAE endorses this initiative, hosting a Mangroves Ministerial during COP28’s Nature, Oceans, and Land Use Day.

The Ministerial focused on accelerating finance, policy, and technology for the Mangrove Breakthrough, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and preserve natural treasures. Costa Rica also endorses the initiative, emphasizing the urgency for concrete mangrove plans.

Dialogue on Climate & Sustainable Finance at COP28

KuCoin, a global crypto exchange, participates in the Green Sustainable Finance Forum at COP28, advocating for green sustainable finance and development. KuCoin’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Nancy Cheung, highlights the role of blockchain technology in promoting green finance, emphasizing the potential for blockchain to drive sustainability efforts and reduce carbon emissions.

Decentralization, inherent in blockchain, is seen as a progressive move toward democratizing access to opportunities and resources, particularly for women and underrepresented groups. KuCoin calls for industry collaboration to foster a sustainable future.

“COP28 Makes History with Inaugural Youth Stocktake”

With about one billion children globally facing extreme climate change risks, young green activists are gaining traction. COP28, especially on Youth Day, aimed to spotlight key issues and emphasized commitments to youth in climate diplomacy. The Youth Climates Delegate Programme concluded the event.

COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber stated the conference’s focus on building a global legacy for youth. The Youth Stocktake, a comprehensive analysis of youth inclusion, occurred on Youth, Children, Skills, and Education Day, marking the end of the youth-led forum mandated by COP.

The Youth Stocktake highlighted unprecedented initiatives for youth inclusion, with 110 dedicated delegates making a significant impact. The focus on education and future skills included the Marketplace of the Future, connecting youth with finance, job opportunities, and mentorship to catalyze transformative change. The goal is to create a lasting legacy for future COPs.

“Unveiling the Impact of Climate Shocks on Middle Eastern Children”

On COP28’s theme day, “Empowering Youth for a Green Future,” World Vision UK spotlights the alarming challenges faced by Middle East youth due to climate change, as outlined in their report, “Growing up in the Climate Crisis.” The region, especially Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and the West Bank, experiences intensified climate impacts such as sandstorms, heat waves, and water shortages, disproportionately affecting children.

Resilience expert Jason Garret notes adverse effects on children’s health and education, with climate-related factors hindering regular school attendance. The report, based on 1,095 surveys, highlights increased food insecurity and water access difficulties, with young voices expressing a desire for proactive solutions.

Mugdam, 16, from Iraq, shares the impact on his family’s agriculture, urging world leaders to address climate change. David Westwood, Director at World Vision UK, emphasizes the urgent need for involving children and young people in climate decision-making, recognizing the lasting impact on their generation and those to come.

“Microsoft and ADIO Showcase Climate Tech Innovations at COP28”

Microsoft and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) showcased 10 sustainability and climate tech startups at COP28, part of the 4th Cohort of the GrowthX Accelerator program. These startups, from various countries, presented innovative solutions addressing climate challenges. The program, launched in collaboration with ADIO, supports B2B startups in Seed to Series A stages. The startups received mentorship and resources during the GrowthX Accelerator: COP28 Edition, culminating in an in-person Demo Day at COP28. The success underscores Microsoft and ADIO’s commitment to fostering the UAE’s startup ecosystem and aligns with the country’s vision to be a global startup hub.
